AirAsia Thailand will launch a new route between Chiang Mai and Sapporo, Japan, and increase its domestic network from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to three cities – Buriam, Surat Thani, Narathiwat.

AirAsia Thailand will launch a new route between Chiang Mai and Sapporo, Japan, and increase its domestic network from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to three cities – Buriam, Surat Thani, Narathiwat.

From June 15, the new route between Chiang Mai and Sapporo New Chitose Airport – via Taipei Taoyuan – will be operated daily.

The new Chiang Mai-Taipei-Sapporo route will be the third Fifth Freedom service the airline will operate via Taiwan. The airline currently operates two routes via Taipei Taoyuan and Kaoshiung: Don Mueang-Taipei Taoyuan-Okinawa and Don Mueang-Kaoshiung-Tokyo Narita.

According to AirAsia Thailand CEO Santisuk Klongchaiya, the forecast demand for the new route has been positive both ways. The new route “opens up new opportunities for the airline to expand its market from Chiang Mai to Taipei and Japan throughout the year.”

AirAsia Thailand will be the third AirAsia group airline to operate flights to Sapporo.

Thai AirAsia X's operates four weekly flights between Bangkok Don Mueang and Sapporo, and two weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia X.

Domestic Expansion at Suvarnabhumi

The three new routes from Suvarnabhumi will start on July 1, with the Thailand-based AirAsia carrier operating three-weekly flights to Buriam, and daily each to both Surat Thani and Narathiwat.

The new domestic routes from Suvarnabhumi – the main international gateway to Bangkok and Thailand - will be in addition to AirAsia Thailand's operations at its main hub at Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport. With the new routes, AirAsia Thailand will operate flights to nine domestic destinations from Suvarnabhumi including Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabia, Hat Yai, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen.

“AirAsia is accelerating its expansion domestically in Thailand this year, with Suvarnabhumi central to the strategy due to its domestic growth potential and ability to accommodate international arrivals looking to continue onward to other regions of the country,” Klongchaiya said.

According to AirAsia, AirAsia Thailand had a 40% share of Thailand's domestic market share in 2024. The airline operates flights on a combined 37 routes from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang.
